What is Diet? Let me tell you what it is not, it is not a weight-loss programme. So what is it? It is what you eat every day. If you eat a lot of junk food every day, that is your diet. One of my mentors said that a lot of people are digging their grave with teeth and using their tongue as the shovel.

Healthy eating habit is the best way to Prevent Lifestyle Diseases

Many of our commonest illnesses are referred to as lifestyle diseases. Why? because they develop slowly over many years, from the way we abuse our bodies from poor care and end up causing severe pain, suffering and even death.

These conditions are also called chronic degenerative diseases, which means that our health goes from bad to worse as we grow older. Not making health choices can be very costly. The reality is, our bodies degenerate because of the way we treat them.

Commonest lifestyle diseases

Examples of these lifesytyle or chronic degenerative diseases are heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes and hypertension. Are you suffering from any of these? Choosing your food carefully can reverse these problems

Without fear of contradiction, the undeniable proofs are there to show that poor nutrition and bad lifestyle choices during our childhood growing up, put us at risk and open doors for these degenerative diseases to take up residence in our lives and dictate the poor quality life we live.

Eating right can promote your health!

There are well established undisputable and undeniable links between healthy choices and good health. Literally hundreds of scientific studies have indicated a strong association between diet and the incidence of chronic degenerative diseases.

It is well known for example, that by choosing to eat a varied and healthy choices that is low in saturated fat and rich in fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates, we can reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and type two diabetes.

Dr Anthony Vendryes writing in the Jamaica Gleaner "Ounce of Prevention", publised on Monday July 30, 2007, pointed out that diets high in tomato products containing lycopene are known to reduce the incidence of prostate cancer in men.

He said health-conscious-food rich in green leafy vegetables, particularly those containing lutein, are associated with reducing the risk of macular degeneration, a common cause of bindness.

Improve your mental health

Evidence is showing that food impact our minds. A recent report out of the U.K. reveals the importance of health conscious diet not only in the prevention of some mental health problems, but in their treatment.

Neurotransmitters, which facilitate communication in the brain, are made from amino acids which are often derived directly from the diet.

The food we eat do play a major role in our feeling of contentment, anxiety and overall cognitive functioning.

Eat enough calories that your body weight requires. That is, a balance between your calorie intake and calorie expenditure, don't eat more food than your body uses

Eat a wide variety of foods. Healthy eating is to include all the various types of food groups in your daily diet.

Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes—foods high in complex carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, low in fat, and free of cholesterol. Your food should be fresh and sturdy. Eat cold food cold and hot foods hot.

Drink more water than anything else you consume. Your body is about 75% water. It is a vital part of a healthy diet. Water helps flush and detoxify the body, especially the kidneys and bladder. Removal of waste products and toxins revitalize your feeling.

Limit sugary foods, salt, and refined-grain products. Sugar is cancer food, start starving those cancer cells now.

Take time and chew your food slowly, savoring every bite. Properly chewing your food will bring out the taste and flavour, and you'll give your system less work that your mouth was made to do

Eat a healthy breakfast to jumpstart your metabolism. Research shows that the body burn calories better in the morning than in the afternoon or evening.
