Headache Comes and Goes - Which One For You?

What are headaches?

womanwithheadache.jpg These are pain experienced in the face and head. The actual pain, however, is caused from irritation to nerve endings in the neck, shoulder, and scalp muscles, and also in the smooth muscles encircling the blood vessels which supply these areas with blood.

These pains are symptoms signaling something wrong going in your body. Headaches occur as a result of the expansion of the blood vessels in the brain.

These blood vessels are usually deflated, but when something is getting out of order, these blood vessels grow large and expand, and put excess pressure on the structure around them, which cause the pain.

There are three major categories of headaches:

  1. Primary, like migraine, tension, and cluster
  2. Secondary are due to an underlying physical problem in the head or neck.
  3. Cranial neuralgias, facial pain, and other types occur because the nerves in the head and upper neck become inflamed and are the source of the pain.

There are four main types of headache These are

  1. Vascular,
  2. Muscle Contraction (tension),
  3. Traction, and
  4. Inflammatory.
Vascular occur mainly in the form of migraine, tension and cluster headaches. Migraine is usually identified by severe and prolonged pain on one or both sides of the head, nauseous stomach and sometimes disturbed vision. 4

Factors that may play a role in triggering cluster headaches, are like environmental changes, circadian (daily) rhythm, and changes in physical, emotional, or intellectual activity.

Muscle Contraction headaches appear to happen when the individual habitually involve the tightening or tensing of facial and neck muscles.

Traction and Inflammatory headaches are symptoms of various disorders, like tumor, stroke, meningitis, encephalitis; sinus, spine, teeth, ear and neck infections.

Pains are nature's warning signals of more serious problems. It is wisdom therefore, to focus on the cause of the headache rather than just trying to suppress or relieve the pain.
